The Malta Weightlifting Association successfully organized the 6th edition of the Malta Club competition last Sunday; held at the Cottonera Sports Complex. This year saw a good number of athletes participate, between the ages of ten and thirty five and spread across five clubs although the title was heavily contested between Cottonera Weightlifting Club and CrossFit 356. The cadets took to the platform in the first competition with Rylee Borg and Kyle Micallef having strong performances to give Cottonera the upper hand in the competition. Their day was topped off by both of them setting National Records in their respective categories.
The second competition saw the men’s A group take to the stage. All of the athletes showed that they were well prepared for this competition with Andy Grech and Vlad Baldacchino setting new personal bests in the process. Kyle Micallef produced the biggest lift of the day with a successful Clean and Jerk of 150kg.
The women were next in line to compete and they did not disappoint. A total of eighteen National Records were broken on the day. Shazel Gusman managed to break ten records in both the youth and junior categories and finished with a total of 106kg.
Rebecca Fitz and Krista Camilleri both broke one record each. Fitz taking a junior record whilst Camilleri took the clean and jerk record in the women’s 63kg category with a lift of 85kg. Yazmin Zammit Stevens had another great performance, finishing with a 155kg total and breaking six records in the 63kg category in the process.
This competition was very exciting to watch as it produced a great battle between Zammit Stevens, Camilleri and Jessica Borg Ghigo in both the snatch and clean and jerk.
The last competition of the day saw the men’s B group take to the platform. By this time, CrossFit 356 had a healthy lead of almost 800 points over the five time winners Cottonera. The Cottonera athletes had to pull off a great performance if they were to retain the title. Once again, the athletes showed that they were well prepared for this competition with Kieran Mifsud having a good comeback competition after injury and finishing with a total of 204kg.
Other athletes to perform well were Owen and Kurt Camilleri, Andre Buhagiar and Michael Fava, who all produced personal bests on the day. On the back of the performances of the final group, Cottonera Weightlifting Club managed to drag themselves out of a hole and finish with a total of 2674 points which was enough to win the title for the 6th time. In second place with a total of 2326 points was CrossFit 356 followed by The Pit with 683. Fourth and fifth place went to University Degree Plus Club and Tritons with 510 and 330 points respectively.
