Floriana FC lifted their first major silverware in 17 years after defeating newly-crowned Premier League champions Valletta FC 1-0 in the cup final at the National Stadium.
Ivan Woods’ strike a minute from time secured Floriana FC’s first major trophy since 1994 and ended Valletta FC’s ambitions of an historic treble.
In front of the highest attendance at the National Stadium this season, the arch-rivals produced a keenly-contested match. As extra time loomed, Woods struck with a neatly-placed free-kick which sent the Floriana fans into raptures.
Victory for Micheal Woods’ side was Floriana’s 19th success in the competition and the club’s first silverware in 17 years − their last major honour coming when they also defeated today’s opponents in the cup final.
Goalkeeper Matthew Towns has played a crucial role in Floriana’s success since he joined earlier this year. The 28-year-old Englishman told UEFA.com: “I’m very happy. Since I arrived here in February it has been really overwhelming. I’m so pleased to have helped Floriana to this FA Trophy success.”
